Tarzan is a 1999 American animated adventure film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is based on the 1912 story Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs, being the first animated major motion picture version of the story.

Kerchak is a large and powerful mountain gorilla who would do anything to protect his family. Due to this, Kerchak often appears to be mistrusting, cold, judgmental, stubborn, narrow-minded and aggressive towards outsiders. The film made the Mangani tribe a family group of gorillas, with Kerchak a silverback gorilla (mature male) head of the family and mate to Tarzan's adoptive mother, Kala. He is essentially a combination of two of the novel's ape characters, Kerchak and Tublat, Kala's mate in Burroughs's original story.
